VoIP and Your Security System

"VOXCOM responded quickly to a fire in our home to prevent any major damage and we even received a phone call from VOXCOM a couple days later to see how we were making out after the fire. We would like to thank VOXCOM for everything that they have done for us."

VoIP and Your Security System

What is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology allows users to speak on the telephone through their high-speed modem just like a regular phone. VOXCOM has tailored its services to allow customers who eliminate their phone lines to choose amongst multiple options for monitoring alarm signals.

For alarm system purposes, there are two variations of VoIP:

  1. Digital Phone Service
Uses a broadband network to make phone calls instead of the Internet, meaning that Digital Phone Service is not reliant on the Internet. This allows a consistent level of quality and reliability to telephone customers. Typically the customer's telephone line works during power outages. VOXCOM is a preferred security system provider for Shaw's Digital Phone Service. Click here for details.
  2. Internet Phone Service
Internet Phone Service converts phone calls into data that zips through a high-speed Internet connection just like email and is reliant on the Internet to work properly. Unless provided by the customer, there is typically no backup power and the customer's phone line will not work during a power outage.

If you are considering switching to VoIP and you choose to keep your standard phone line:

  • No change is required with your system.

If you are considering switching to VoIP and you choose to cancel your standard phone line:

  • Your VoIP phone connection may need to be reconfigured to ensure communication with our Emergency Response Centre. Contact a VOXCOM representative for details at 1.800.387.2966.

Monitoring via VoIP Connection

It is possible for VOXCOM to monitor via a VoIP connection; however, if the VoIP connection is reliant on the Internet for connectivity, the security service is then only as reliable as the Internet connection.

How do I ensure that I'm Protected with Internet phone service (that is reliant on the Internet)?

Add a secondary mode of communication through VOXCOM's ResponseNet Cellular Monitoring.
