Apparently the thieves were targeting a few businesses around the area, especially those that did not have alarm systems. VoIP and Your Security System

Advances in technology have created more choice and options for consumers - including choice in phone service providers. Today consumers can choose from a growing number of alternatives to traditional “land line” phone services. Choices include Internet; broadband; and wireless phone services. Regardless of what customers use for their primary phone line, VOXCOM is able to connect them to our Emergency Response Centre and monitor their security and life safety systems. VOXCOM has tailored and developed its services to monitor alarm signals for customers who choose an alternative to traditional phone service.

Examples of alternative phone service providers:

Digital Phone Service

Uses a broadband network to make phone calls instead of the Internet, meaning that Digital Phone Service is not reliant on the Internet. Some examples include Shaw, Rogers, Cogeco, and Videotron. This allows a consistent level of quality and reliability to telephone customers. Typically the customer's telephone line works during power outages – for more details, check with the digital phone service provider.

Internet Phone Service

Internet Phone Service converts phone calls into data that zips through a high-speed Internet connection just like email and is reliant on the Internet to work properly. Unless provided by the customer, there is typically no backup power and the customer's phone line will not work during a power outage.

Wireless Phone Service

Many customers are choosing not to have a traditional phone line installed into their home, instead using their wireless phone(s) as their primary phone line.

Connecting your security system to an alternative phone service:

If you are considering an alternative to traditional phone service, please note that there may be some steps you are required to take, to ensure that your alarm system is set up to function properly.

IF You switch to an alternative phone service AND You keep your traditional phone line
  • No change is required with your system. Your system will be connected to VOXCOM’s Emergency Response Centre through the traditional phone line.
IF You switch to an alternative phone service AND You cancel your Traditional phone line
  • Your VoIP phone connection may need to be reconfigured to ensure communication with our Emergency Response Centre. Contact a VOXCOM representative for details at 1.800.387.2966.
  • Please note if your phone connection is heavily dependent on your connection to the internet, it is only as reliable as your internet connection and subsequently, so is your security system.
  • To increase the reliability, VOXCOM recommends that customers add ResponseNet™ Wireless service.
IF You switch to wireless/ mobile phone (as your primary phone) AND You cancel your Traditional phone line
  • VOXCOM can connect your home security system to our Emergency Response Centre through our ResponseNet™ Wireless service.

The most secure solution

For added security and reliability, VOXCOM offers ResponseNet Wireless. ResponseNet works where a traditional phone line is not available or where an extra layer of protection is required. For some alternative phone services, ResponseNet is an essential solution; for others it is an ideal layer of added security - in either case, ResponseNet Wireless is a safe, secure solution.
